One of the 22 republics of the Russian Federation. It is located in the western part of the Middle Urals, in the interfluve of the Kama river and its right tributary of Vyatka. Udmurtia has a powerful military-industrial complex. The leading branch of the economy is the industry.
Votsk Autonomous Oblast of the RSFSR was formed in 1920. In 1932 it was renamed the Udmurt Autonomous Oblast, and in 1934 it was reorganized into the Udmurt ASSR. In 1990, the Supreme Soviet of the Udmurt ASSR proclaimed the sovereignty of the republic and the new name - the Udmurt Republic.
The titular ethnic group is Udmurt people. Language is the defining marker of their differences from the titular nation of the country. The Udmurt language, belonging to the Permic group of the Uralic language family, has four dialects: northern, southern, peripheral-southern and Besermyan. Udmurts are mostly Orthodox.
According to the All-Russian Population Census of 2010, Udmurts make up 28% of the population of the republic, while Russians - 62.2%.
The situation in inter-ethnic relations is characterized as stable.
